Heard in the Backyard
Mac Carter Joins Backyard
Backyard has just added a major talent in storytelling director Mac Carter. Known for his signature blend of cinematic visual design with understated, naturalistic performance, Carter has filmed more than 100 commercials all around the world. His international client roster includes Intel, Jaguar, Visa, SBC, Kellogg's, Burger King, Chevrolet, Dunkin' Donuts, Visa, MasterCard, Chevrolet, McDonald's, John Hancock, Coca-Cola and Toyota.
"I love well-told stories, and if they happen to have a quirky tone, a unique character, an intriguing hook, then all the better," noted Carter, who was represented by Anonymous Content prior to joining Backyard. "When I get a board that's the first thing I'm looking for: how is this story special? What's going to keep an audience engaged and give them something to remember? And what can I bring to the project with my visual style, production design, and performance work to, ideally, elevate it?"
Among Carter's many accolades have been a Bronze Lion at Cannes for a Mill Valley Film Festival project via Arnold, San Francisco; a Golden Pencil in 2003; and a Gold Bessie for an AGF ad via Y&R, Toronto.
"I've followed Mac's work for some time and have always been impressed with how he can tell a simple story and capture those amusing human moments that happen in everyday life," noted Backyard President/Partner Blair Stribley. "Mac also brings a strong art direction point of view to his work. I think the combination of the performances in his stories and the look of his film deliver a very pleasing and relatable experience. And to top it off, he's a great personality fit for Backyard."
A lifelong artist and comic book enthusiast, Carter recently created The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft, a nightmarish adventure yarn published by Image Comics. Carter also completed a documentary on DC Comics, Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics.
"Any great production requires great teamwork. To me, that's Backyard's signature," stated Carter. "From my very first meeting with Blair, I got the sense that Backyard offered the promise of genuine collaborative filmmaking- that I would be going to a home where I would be thoroughly supported at every step in the creative process, from the first call to the final cut."
